Excerpt from Real Boy (2024) by Julian A.M.P

I guess I have been trapped in my body for my entire life and so was Pinocchio for a while. Pinocchio wanted to be a real boy. I read that story more than once, of course I did, but it never really resonated for me. Why would he want to be real when he could be an inanimate object and never have to explain himself to anyone, ever. Pinocchio wanted to be a real boy and after a series of very entertaining ordeals, he finally got his wish. Except in the Guillermo del Toro version. In that one he dies in a land-mine explosion after rescuing his father Geppetto from the jaws of the giant fish. I never watched the film. I can’t manage suspense. I just read about it on Wikipedia.
